I was surfing on the internet today, looking for an idea for my next blog and I found this website. Before I read what it says on this site, I only thought that Ipads were fun and nice electronic devices. An Ipad is like a small computer you can easily carry with you everywhere. I never thought that an Ipad could be a useful tool in a classroom, but turns out it is!
As mentioned on this website, Ipads have a positive impact in class. It creates a more peaceful environment, students are more motivated and they collaborate more. Also, it helps improve the quality of students’ work.
Furthermore, apple even has a page which encourages the use of ipad in class. It talks about how to use it, textbooks, how to use it as a study partner, etc. There is a also a section which suggests different apps according to the field, there is a section for mathematics, a section for science, a section for geography, etc. The apple website is then very usefull and convincing about using Ipads in class.
There is also a big variety of applications for Ipad related to education. A lot of websites recommend applications to use in class. Here is an example of this kind of website. you can find on this one 20 nice applications for educators. Obviously there exists a lot more than 20 applications which can make the lives of the teacher and the students easier and a lot more fun.
Finally, I don’t see any reasons why Ipads shouldn’t be used in class.
My friend Laurence talked about an interesting subject on her blog earlier this week. It interested me enough to blog about it myself!
Should teacher let students use their laptops in class? That is an interesting question. Some may be for it because laptops help students take better notes, they type quickly and it is more efficient but other may claim that it can easily distracts the students.
There are a lot of arguments against the use of laptops in class, Indeed, some studies, which I found absolutely useful, show that students who use their computers in class remember less lecture content and are less attentive and less performant. Also, they can, in fact, easily distract students. Students will probably be more interested to update their facebook status and to tweet than to listen to what the teacher says. Furthermore, some other studies prove that students use their laptops in class to check their e-mails, to use instant messaging and surf on the internet.
I agree that laptops are really helpful when it comes to doing team projects and taking notes but I think it is too distracting for the students and that it shouldn’t be allowed in class all the time. However, I think teachers should sometimes allow students to bring their own computer in class. Students could work on their projects or texts or whatever they have to do while being in the class and they could also do researches easily.
To conclude, I think laptops should be allowed in class but not all the time. It distracts students so I don’t think teachers should allow their students to take notes directly on their computers but I think it would be more useful to allow them to bring their computers when they have to work in team or individually. After all, if they waste their time on facebook when they are supposed to work on a project in class, they’ll just have to work more at home! I couldn’t agree more with what it says at the end of this article, “At the end of the day, it’s up to students to decide what they will get out of class.”
I found a very interesting topic on my friend’s blog. Interesting but also controversial. Thoughts and opinions about it are really different. Why not utilize students’ favorite tool in class? Probably because teachers are scared of sharing their personnal informations and getting too much into their students’ lives. There is a way of interact with your students on facebook without even being friends with them. Truth is, facebook is a part of their everyday life so we should lake advantage of this. They go on facebook everyday so they will, while enjoying facebook, see things related to your class.
Facebook is a good way to contact your students and have a quick answer. Plus, you can see who saw your post or messages. really usefull. Also, it creates a friendly and relaxed relation and atmosphere between you and your students. Since most of them use facebook everyday, they are probably comfortable with it.
It is recommended to create a seperate account which you will use to contact your students as suggested on this website. If you don’t want to friend them, you can simply create a group for your students or your class in which you can interact really effectively with them.
You can wether create a page ou a group but, I personaly prefer the group. Your group can be a closed group and you can set the privacy settings as you wish. This is a good way of keeping your personnal life private but still be able to interact with your students by using their favorite website. I found two really good articles about it. Both, this one and this one, are really complete and share A LOT of information. They also explain how to create group or pages and explain stuffs about privacy settings, etc.
I think facebook is a great useful tool for teacher when you know how to use it properly. There are a few details like privacy settings which you must pay attention to, but, in the end, it is worth it.
